3 Phase Solar System Cost: $375 to $1,500 Inverter Upcharge, Export Limits by Distributor and the Phase Upgrade (October 2026)

$375 to $1,500 is what a three-phase inverter adds to a solar quote in October 2026, so a 10 kW three-phase system is $10,185 to $13,200 on the national offers after the STC discount at $39 per STC. Converting a single-phase supply is a separate job from $586 in distributor fees to $7,000 all-in. Prices checked 27 October 2026.

What three phase adds to a solar quote in October 2026

A three-phase inverter adds $375 to $1,500 to a solar quote on the sourced range: $375 is the wholesale difference between a 5 kW hybrid inverter and its single-phase twin, ex GST, and $1,500 is the top of an installed estimate. Nothing else in the system changes with the phase. On the national standard 10 kW offer of $9,810, a three-phase 10 kW system is $10,185 to $13,200 in October 2026, after the STC discount at $39 per certificate and including GST.

You have three phase if the switchboard carries three main fuses or a three-pole main switch and the meter is marked three phase or polyphase; most houses built before the 1990s are single phase, and most with ducted air conditioning or a large workshop are not. The distributor's connection letter or your retailer can confirm it. Everything below splits into what three phase costs, what it changes at the meter, and when a single-phase home should pay to convert.

The three-phase inverter upcharge

At the wholesale counter the premium is small. A 5 kW three-phase string inverter of one European brand lists at $2,948 ex GST against $2,444 for the same brand's single-phase unit, a gap of $504; the hybrid pair is $3,824 against $3,449, a gap of $375; the 10 kW hybrid pair is $5,399 against $5,099, a gap of $300. Installed, the estimate we hold runs $600 to $1,500 because the quote adds GST, a three-phase meter panel, heavier cable and the installer's margin on a dearer unit.

Supplied and installed inside a new residential system, the brand ranges in our pricing file are $1,300 to $2,600 for Sungrow, $2,000 to $3,800 for Fronius and $1,900 to $3,600 for SMA, single or three phase; the three-phase unit sits in the upper half of each band. A quote should name the inverter model and its phase, and the quote check flags one that does not.

8, 10, 13 and 20 kW on three phase

Add the upcharge to the national offers and an 8 kW three-phase system is $8,358 to $11,027, 10 kW is $10,185 to $13,200, 13 kW is $12,840 to $16,366 and 20 kW is $19,034 to $23,754. The 8 kW figure is interpolated between the index's 7 and 10 kW rows and the 13 and 20 kW figures are scaled from 10 kW with the commercial index, as each size page explains; 10 kW is a published row.

The table prices the inverter, not a supply conversion. If the house is single phase and the choice is to convert, the conversion cost in the upgrade section below is a separate line and usually larger than the inverter upcharge. The 10 kW cost page prices that size for each capital.

What three phase changes: inverter caps and export limits by distributor

Three phase changes two numbers at the meter: the inverter capacity the distributor accepts on a basic connection, and the export it allows. Both are set per distributor and most publish them per phase. Jemena allows 10 kVA of inverter and 5 kVA of export per phase, so 30 kVA and 15 kVA on three phase; TasNetworks allows 10 kW of export per phase, the highest in the set; SA Power Networks fixes export at 1.5 kW per phase unless the home takes flexible export, which lifts it to 10 kW per phase; Essential Energy holds 5 kW of export at the site whatever the phase count. "Not published" means the distributor's page could not be fetched or carries no figure. Rows marked with an asterisk (Energex, Ergon Energy, Power and Water Corporation) come from an industry summary of the distributor's rules because the distributor's own site blocked us on 27 October 2026; treat them as unverified until the distributor's document is read.

The export column is the one that decides whether three phase pays. Where the three-phase export is three times the single-phase figure, as at Ausgrid, Jemena, AusNet Services, United Energy, Energex, Ergon Energy, Horizon Power and TasNetworks, a 10 kW array exports everything it makes; where it is a site total, as at Essential Energy and Western Power, three phase buys no export headroom at all; SA Power Networks sits between, at 1.5 kW per phase fixed. Each capital's figures are on its Sydney, Melbourne and other city pages.

Which sizes actually need three phase

The 133 per cent design rule sets the smallest inverter for each array, and the distributor's single-phase cap says whether that inverter can connect. 13 distributors carry a single-phase cap in our data (3 of them from secondary sources); the smallest is 10 kVA. Up to 13 kW of panels, which needs a 9.77 kW inverter, every cap allows the inverter on single phase. At 20 kW the 15.04 kW inverter is above the 10 kVA caps and is allowed only by Ausgrid, United Energy and Western Power.

So the honest answer is that three phase is rarely required for the inverter below 20 kW; it is chosen for export, for voltage stability on a long rural line, or because the house already has it. On single phase a larger inverter connects with an export limiter at $200 to $500 installed, set to the distributor's figure.

Connection applicationSame form on most networksAusgrid charges the same application fee for single phase up to 10 kW and three phase up to 10 kW per phase

Two points are missed in most quotes. A single-phase inverter can be installed on a three-phase house, and some distributors allow it only up to a per-phase limit (Evoenergy 5 kVA per phase, Horizon Power 3 kVA on any one phase); the export cap then applies to that one phase. And a three-phase inverter does not make backup power simpler: during an outage most hybrid inverters back up one phase, so the circuits you want to keep alive have to be wired to that phase.

When a single-phase home should upgrade, and what it costs

Converting a single-phase supply to three phase is an electrical job with two parts: the distributor reconnects the service, and a licensed electrician (a Level 2 service provider in New South Wales) replaces the switchboard and consumer mains. Only one distributor in our set publishes a fixed fee for its part: Western Power charges $586 to $853 for a phase conversion, lodged by an electrical contractor, with five to seven weeks to disconnect and reconnect. SA Power Networks allows up to 10 business days to respond and up to 12 weeks for the work and prices it in a manual we have not read; Ausgrid prices the job in the connection offer. The all-in electrician estimates we hold are $4,000 to $7,000 for a typical Sydney house with three phase already in the street and $5,000 to $12,000 in Melbourne, rising past $15,000 where the network must extend the street supply. All three estimates are contractor figures, dated in the table, not quotes we have checked.

Upgrade when a load needs it, not for the solar. A 32 amp single-phase circuit delivers 7.36 kW, so a 7.36 kW car charger is the most single phase gives; a 32 amp three-phase circuit delivers 22.08 kW. A workshop machine, a large ducted air conditioner or a 20 kW array are the other triggers. For a 6.6, 8, 10 or 13 kW array on its own, the export limiter at $200 to $500 does the job for a twentieth of the conversion cost, and the next section shows why the lost export does not repay the difference.

Does the upgrade pay on export alone

Take a 10 kW array on single phase with a 5 kW export cap and no daytime load, the worst case for clipping. Our half-sine model over a 10 hour day puts the clipped energy at 1,960 kWh a year in Sydney, worth $78 at the New South Wales feed-in rate of 4 cents, and 1,949 kWh in Melbourne, worth $58 at 3 cents. Against the low Sydney conversion estimate of $4,000, the export alone repays the upgrade in 51 years in Sydney and 69 years in Melbourne. No capital gets under 20 years, and a battery or a daytime load removes the clipping for less.

Years for recovered export to repay a $4,000 phase conversion, 10 kW array, 5 kW single-phase cap, by capital
CityClipped a year, kWhFeed-in rateExport recovered a yearYears to repay $4,000
Sydney1,9604 c$7851 years

Canberra3,0326 c$18222 years
Hobart1,9819.28 c$18422 years
Darwin2,2729.13 c$20719 years

The model is an upper bound on the clipped energy, which makes it a lower bound on the payback: any daytime use shortens the clipped hours and lengthens the years. Flexible export, now offered by 10 distributors in the table above, lifts the single-phase cap on most days and shrinks the case further.

The STC audit does not change with the phase

Certificates are counted on panel kilowatts, zone and deeming years, rounded down, and the inverter's phase is not in the formula. A 10 kW array earns 69 certificates in Zone 3, $2,691 at $39 each, on single phase or three; a 13 kW array earns 89, $3,471; a 20 kW array earns 138, $5,382. If a three-phase quote shows a smaller certificate line than the single-phase quote for the same panels, the installer has changed the panel count or the price per certificate, and the quote should say which.

Three-phase solar questions

How much more does a 3 phase solar system cost?

$375 to $1,500 more than the same system on single phase in October 2026: the wholesale gap between twin 5 kW hybrid inverters is $375 ex GST and the installed estimate tops out at $1,500. A 10 kW three-phase system is $10,185 to $13,200 on the national offers.

How much does a three phase solar inverter cost?

$2,948 ex GST for a 5 kW three-phase string inverter of a European brand against $2,444 for its single-phase twin; 8 to 10 kW three-phase string units list at $2,129 to $4,124 ex GST, and a 10 kW three-phase hybrid at $5,399.

What is the difference between single phase and three phase solar?

3 times the export headroom on most networks (Jemena 15 kVA against 5 kVA per phase), $375 to $1,500 more for the inverter, less voltage rise, and the same panels, STCs and billing; Essential Energy caps export at 5 kW for the site on either.

Does a 10kW solar system need three phase power?

7.52 kW is the smallest inverter a 10 kW array can use, and all 13 distributors with a single-phase inverter cap in our data allow it, so 10 kW does not need three phase for the inverter; it needs an export limiter at $200 to $500 or a three-phase connection to export above the single-phase cap.

How much does it cost to upgrade from single phase to three phase?

$586 to $853 is the only distributor fee published in our set (Western Power, network side only); all-in electrician estimates are $4,000 to $7,000 for a typical Sydney house and $5,000 to $12,000 in Melbourne, more where the street supply must be extended.

Is it worth upgrading to three phase for solar?

51 years is how long the export recovered from a 10 kW array in Sydney takes to repay a $4,000 conversion at a 4 cent feed-in rate in our model, so the upgrade is worth it for a 22.08 kW car charger, a workshop or a 20 kW array, not for the export.

Do STCs change on a three phase solar system?

0 is the change: a 10 kW array earns 69 certificates in Zone 3 and 59 in Zone 4 whatever the phase, worth $2,691 and $2,301 at $39 each, because the formula uses panel kilowatts, zone and deeming years only.
