Common questions
How much do solar panels cost in Australia in 2026?
A standard 6.6kW system costs $4,000–$6,500 after federal STC rebates. Prices vary by state, panel brand, and installer. Premium panels and larger systems (10–13kW) cost $7,000–$13,000. Use our free solar calculator above to get a personalised cost estimate for your home.
How much can I save with solar panels?
A typical 6.6kW system saves $1,200–$2,500 per year depending on your electricity rate, sun hours, and self-consumption habits. South Australia sees the highest savings due to expensive electricity rates. Over 25 years, total savings can exceed $60,000.
What's the payback period for solar in Australia?
Most residential solar systems pay for themselves in 3–5 years. After payback, every dollar saved is pure profit. With electricity prices rising 4–6% annually, the returns improve each year.
Is SolarScorecard really free?
Yes — 100% free, always. We make money when you optionally choose to get installer quotes and an installer pays us a referral fee. The scorecard tool, educational content, and all analysis is completely free with no strings attached.
What size solar system do I need?
System size depends on your electricity usage: 5kW suits 1–2 person households (bills under $300/quarter), 6.6kW suits 3–4 people ($300–$700/quarter), 10kW+ suits larger households, pool pumps, or EV owners. Our calculator recommends a specific size based on your actual bill.
Do solar panels work on cloudy days?
Yes, solar panels produce electricity from daylight, not direct sunlight. Output is reduced on cloudy days (typically 10–25% of full capacity), but panels still generate power. This is already factored into the peak sun hour data we use for your location.
